Is there any way that HG could really happen?

So how likely is this plot? I mean, it's based on reality TV, right? They make contestants in reality TV shows compete against each other to survive the competition and become the winner. While they don't kill anyone, they have no problem spreading lies about their rivals or trying to gain an edge any way they can. So...how close are we to having a similar type of reality TV?

You could jump back and say the Hunger Games have already happened back in Rome with the Colosseum. That was totally the reality TV of those days, and it involved a fight to the death, but I don't think it involved children. You'd have to check back on that.

As for today, I'm not sure. I'd like to think that we'd never go that far with our entertainment, but there's always a chance.

It could still happen. At the reaping, the major reads the history of Panem and we discover that everything came as a result of countless natural disasters. Right now? We are headed pretty fast for that stage, and the global warming is building up. So yes, it could happen.

I'm not sure if the natural disasters alone would lead to the same course of events that ended up being the Hunger Games.

Yeah, we do have a lot of natural disasters and if they get bad enough I do think that the world would split itself up into districts like Panem to make the best use of the natural resources. I also think it's possible that we could have something similar to the Hunger Games, but I don't think that you need one to have the other.

But then again, you may be right. It might take civilization being that far gone before anyone decides to throw a bunch of kids in an arena to fight to the death.

me being me- wouldn't it be illegal to have the hunger games become a reality? i doubt that you can actually pick a random child and force them to kill others.....

I think the point of the post is that the world would not have to totally change. Considering where we are already in society, unfortunately not a lot would have to change for the hunger games to become a reality. Just look at the new Fear Factor show that is coming back on. The original one started losing viewers because all the stunts had been done, so they decide to revamp it and push the envelope on what they can get people to do. If we keep pushing that envelope eventually what could come of it?

But weren't the H G a result of the uprising? So maybe there would be no "need" to have the H G. But maybe the HG will happen for a different reason. I hope not!!! (However fantastic the books may be!)

While I agree somewhat what I am saying is that the world wouldn't have to completely change, just push the envelope a little further.

And I think you can compare HG to Fear Factor. If a "Fear Factor" type show got to the point where people were volunteering to battle to the death for an audience on live tv, would it be so different than the HG? While maybe not as bad (no kids, not forced to do it, and so on) I think it is pretty much the same thing, and may lead to HG type events in third world areas where things might be a little more hard core. Just a thought.

The HG has happened before. Just back in the old days, HG was called the Gladiators. The Gladiators would fight to the death, were forced to fight to the death. Just like the HG. They were forced to fight against their own will. The winner would become a free man in the old days. In the HG, the winner would receive enough food and would, in a sense, become "free", as free as they could ever be.

Well, I guess you could put a bunch a people in a raffle and stuff, but where in the United States would we have an arena THAT big? I mean isn't that called war?

Depends on how you define children.  We only see 25 and better in gladiator movies, but back in ye olde times, you were an adult at 15 and ready for war (ready or not) or married off and pregnant with children of your own.
