Does anyone else read fanfiction on their ebook reader?

That was one of the primary reasons I got an ebook reader. Or more specifically: I wanted to read lots of text that could only be read online, but it would have overstrained my eyes reading it on the computer with a backlit screen. I feel like a whole new world of ("participatory literature?") has opened up to me.

It took me a while to figure out the best formatting, but after a bit I decided that HTML was best. I just copy the info block and story text from Fanfiction.net entries, then erase the "" part in an HTML editor.

Not fanfic, but I have started looking for online short stories and I've even found the occasional full length novel on the aithor's website. If it's not already formatted I select the story block and copy it to Word, then I save it as a PDF file to transfer to my ereader. I love being able to sample an author's work this way.

I do like to try out new authors work when they've put a sample up online. I will go back and buy one of their other books if I've enjoyed the sample.

I don't read fan-fic particularly - especially when the original author has copyright issues with it.

Have you found archiveofourown.org? And if you like Buffy, Twisting the Hellmouth (tthfanfic.org) offers all their stories in epub and mobi formats. And there's also Amalthia's archive ( http://amalthia.mediawood.net/ebooks/ ).

Also, if you save your chapters in reverse order to Instapaper.com, you can them download an ebook in epub or mobi format. (has to be reverse order because Instapaper always puts newest entries at the top, blog-style).

Oh, and there's a little utility (Fanfiction Downloader: http://www.home-eisele.de/downloader_e.php ) that will automatically save stories from fanfiction.net (and a few other sites) in doc, HTML, PDF or mobi formats.

Can you tell this is my main vice?

Calibre will also convert .txt files into Nook format. I save all the fic I like in .txt format for ease of conversion.

Bless the cleverness of humanity. Everytime I think, "It'd be a good idea to make X," someone's already made it. The only thing I'd change is having options for having main Characters in the heading block, and including series name in the output file (maybe as "%c" for "Category?". Well, I can always change that myself, since this app will already make things much more convenient and quick.

My only problem with that was losing bold and italics. Especially for some series where bold and italics have significant story importance (like Umineko, where it's used for indicating Red and Blue Truth).

Apologies for butting in but this looks like a really good place to ask what fanfiction is? I see it mentioned a lot on LT but I haven't got a clue. Thanks to anyone willing to explain.

timepiece thsanks for that link. I usually copy and paste into wordpad, save and then get stanza to convert to epub. That'll save some steps.

Yeah, that's an annoyance, but formatting wins over style for me. When I write stuff, I avoid bold and italics for formatting ease.

His aesthetics aren't the best, but that little utility has gotten a lot of use. I posted that link in some Livejournal fanfic communities, and people were *thrilled*. If only it could work on Livejournal itself.

For those, I do the Instapaper thing.

Oh the utility is fine. Just can't read the website it sits on. :(
