Daniel Pink provides an analysis of some of our most pressing personal and economic issues today and how changes brought about by technology and globalization will affect how we live and work. Pink remarks that we are moving from an economy and society built on logical linear, computerlike capabilities of the Information Age to a Conceptual Age, which he claims is built on invention, empathy, and big-picture capabilities.
This book introduces what Pink call “six senses” on which professional success and personal satisfaction will depend. Each of the senses is discussed in some detail in the book.
A Whole New Mind is high concept and high touch. Pink offers an appeal to the logical, analytical thinkers in one of the chapters by addressing three major social and economic forces confronting society today – Abundance, Asia and Automation. This is an interesting book on left-brain, right-brain thinking.
Questions:1. What is your reaction to Pink’s six senses? Do you believe you would want to implement them yourself? If no, will you explain.
2. Do you agree that the MFA degree seems to be increasingly valuable in the workplace as may soon overtake the MBA in value?
3. How would you relate some of his suggestions to science?
4. Answer these questions posed by Pink: 1) Can someone overseas do your job cheaper? 2) Can a computer do your job faster? 3) Are you offering something that satisfies the nonmaterial, transcendent desires of an abundant age? If your answers are “yes” to the first two and “no” to the thred, what actions, if any, are you taking to avoid a career crisis?
