How did everyone do this year? What books did you read, what mini-challenges did you complete, etc.?

I personally didn't make much progress; I seem to have finished books in only four new categories:

371 School management; special education: Three Cups of Tea
616 Diseases: The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks
796 Athletic & outdoor sports & games: Born to Run
967 General history of Africa; Central Africa & offshore islands: Facing the Lion

All good books, but I'm hoping to do better next year.

I think I did alright. At one point I was making a concerted effort to read books that would fill gaps in my DDC list, other times I let the books fall where they may.

775 Photography: Digital techniques The Digital Photography Book
779 Collections of Photographs The Dawn of the Color Photograph
792 Theater Mock Stars: Indie Comedy and the Dangerously Funny

839 Literature in other Germanic languages Kristin Lavransdatter

902 Chronology, Historical Napoleon's Privates: 2,500 Years of History Unzipped
950 History: Asia The Horse, the Wheel, and Language: How Bronze-Age Riders from the Eurasian Steppes Shaped the Modern World
946 History: Spain and Portugal The Basque History of the World
955 History: Iran The Ayatollah Begs To Differ: The Paradox of Modern Iran

302 Social psychology The Story of Writing
355 Army; Military Science Siege Warfare in the Roman World 146 BC-AD 378

I made some progress, but not a whole lot. Not surprising, really, since I spent my income tax refund on a shiny new iToy and had a bit of a break from reading over lunch.

201 A Short History of Myth
311 How to Lie with Statistics
907 The Footnote: A Curious History
936 A Brief History of Stonehenge

I already posted this on my personal thread, but for those who don't read them, I'll repost here. I had an outstanding year of non-fiction reading. I don't actively seek out books in new categories, but just fill in the spaces as I read.

823 - A Room of One's Own (reread), and
305 - Women and Writing, Virginia Woolf -- essays

Living Dolls, Natasha Walter (can't find Dewey info on this one), and,
302.23 - Enlightened Sexism, Susan Douglas -- feminism

236.9 -Have a Nice Doomsday, Nicholas Guyatt, and
277.308 Quiverfull, Kathryn Joyce -- Cultural studies, religion

155.23 - Brightsided, Barbara Ehrenreich -- cultural studies, general

808 - Best American Science Writing 2009, Natalie Angier, ed. (LT gave me this number but I think it's wrong)

The rest I'd categorize as cultural studies, political and human rights:

307.76 Planet of Slums, Mike Davis
791.45 Age of Oprah, Janice Peck
910.202 Travel as a Political Act, Rick Steves
305 - Murder in Amsterdam, Ian Buruma
323 Means of Reproduction, Michelle Goldberg
297.082 Caged Virgin, Ayaan Hirsi Ali

Every single one of these was a great read.

I added 22 new titles in 2010, but in only 8 new divisions, so both of my mini-challenges are unfinished:

"Have at least 1 book listed under all 10 categories" - I still have 2 open Categories (100's and 400's)

"Have at least 1 book listed in all 10 divisions within 1 category" - I haven't made it past 7 divisions (I have 7 in both 300's and 700's)

...and I'm not even close to having a full list of sections in any division.

Well, I don't think I'll finish another one before the new year so here goes. I didn't manage to meet my challenge for the year. I had wanted to bring my total number of sections completed up to a hundred but I'm eight short. Oh well. I guess I'll roll that one over to next year.

My 2010 goals were:

1. Get all ten divisions in another class. (I already have all ten in the 5xxs and 8xxs).

Met with the 9xx.

Get all ten sections in a division. (I do have all six 00x that are actually in use, but it seems like cheating to count that.) My most likely candidates are 91x and 97x; I have eight + one TBR for both of those right now.

Not met; rolling over to next year. (I read one in 97x, and have one TBR.)

Get to 50% of the in-use sections for the 500 class. I'm at 43/96 now, and have two TBR, so this only requires three books other than what I already have on the queue.

Met; actually I have one extra.

New sections in 2010:
011 - More Book Lust
091 - The Voynich Manuscript
307 - The Works: Anatomy of a city
338 - Farmer Jane (my review)
359 - The Frigate Surprise
381 - Cheap: The high cost of discount culture
382 - A Splendid Exchange
411 - Lost Languages
439 - Born to Kvetch
507 - The Ten Most Beautiful Experiments (my review)
521 - Feynman's Lost Lecture
567 - How to Build a Dinosaur
590 - The Animal Review
592 - Waiting for Aphrodite
594 - The Search for the Giant Squid
636 - Buffalo for the Broken Heart
681 - Decoding the Heavens (actually, I had two 681 this year; The Difference Engine was first, but this was far superior)
794 - The Turk
798 - Mad Dogs and an Englishwoman
957 - Tuva or Bust
960 - Into Africa
979 - A Crack in the Edge of the World
982 - On a Hoof and a Prayer
998 - The Ends of the Earth

I have to admit- The Search for the Giant Squid definitely intrigues me.

My major coup for the year was actually finding an interesting book in the "Beverage Technology" category. It's Bottled and Sold for those who are interested.

>8 lahochstetler: I can't believe there's a "beverage technology" category. That's crazy.

I know- some of the categories really are ridiculous.

A Search for the Giant Squid was good, but not great; its main flaw is being dated, though there doesn't seem to be anything more recent.

8,9>

Worse, something like A History of the World in Six Glasses doesn't count for that category -- it's just a plain old 641 like all the cookbooks.
