Sobre mimWhat to say...

I am a bibliophile in every sense of the word. I love reading and I love books. For those of us who are true bibliophiles there is an understanding for this distinction; I love reading, as in the words on a page, and I love books, meaning the physical objects.

Books are an integral component of who I am.

Sobre a minha bibliotecaMy library has many different facets and functions:

First, it is a library for books I enjoy. Period. Topic and author notwithstanding, if I enjoy a book it is very likely to find its way onto my shelves.

Second, I collect authors. Aldous Huxley, George Orwell, Arthur Conan Doyle, Virginia Woolf, Bertrand Russell, and Mark Twain are just some of the authors whom I actively 'collect'. This section is very strongly linked with the aforementioned "books I enjoy". If an author's work intrigues me (indeed, even the author themself) I will actively seek them out and collect their works.

Third, there are specific topics that interest me which I actively collect. The largest 'topic' in my library is composed of books and ephemera concerning the 15th Prime Minister of Canada, Pierre Elliott Trudeau.

Fourth, my library is a function of practicality. I actively study both history and political science and many of my books center around these two topics. Specifically, I study Canadian history and Canadian politics.

Fifth, but far from final, my library is a collection of physical books. As I previously mentioned, I am a bibliophile in the truest sense. I see a deep beauty in books as physical items. They are a form of artwork, really. I collect bibles, antiquarian books, and modern, specially bound books (such as Easton Press, The Folio Society, and Franklin Library) for this artistic value.

I look back at this description of my library and feel it's an honest attempt to describe what is on my shelves, and yet I cannot help but feel that it's painfully inadequate. My books are very central to my character and mirror much of who I am. They are an eclectic lot that have been assembled with the greatest of care. My library has grown, and continues to grow, as I do.
