Sobre mimEternal student, jack of a few trades, master of none. I try to lessen my ignorance generally with a haphazard mix of non-fiction, travel writing, biography, fiction and language learning. Worst traits: distractibility, procrastinatability and neologigenesis.

Sobre a minha bibliotecaA Folio book discovered me in a charity shop in 2009 and I was soon adopted by the charming bindings and original illustrations of all its sibs and cousins. My early family members were all standard Folio editions but then, insidiously inoculated with the FAD (Folio Acquisition Disorder) virus, I began to notice an increasing number of limited editions asserting themselves in the limited space of my compact outpatient accommodation.

The virulence of the virus is such that by the end of the seventh year of Foliomania, my person found itself lodger to a landlord of some fifteen hundred Folio volumes. That figure is now reduced thanks to partially recovered mental health and a wish to be able to move sideways indoors. This painful therapeutic adjustment saw the eviction of all books I judged myself unlikely to read within the next two decades. Now able to move sideways, I feel I'm moving forward. However, the FAD virus remains only partially suppressed and I've resigned myself to succumbing to a few fresh Folio temptations every year, particularly if forthcoming readables remain as irresistible as the recent Ulysses, The Yangtze Valley and Beyond, and The Golden Bough, all obscenely exquisite.

I've a special fondness for the very earliest Folio editions published in dustjackets in the late 1940s and 1950s, for the elegant Folio Fine Press series published between 1987 and 1991, and the regrettably scarce signed limited edition series produced in the 1990s with special bindings of quarter Morocco over exquisite hand-marbled boards.

Everyman's Library, Collins New Naturalists, Limited Editions Club, Heritage Press, a few Imprint Society and Westvaco volumes, and innumerable paperbacks all jostle with Folios for attention.

I'd lend a Folio to a friend, but no true friend would ask to borrow one.
