******************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************
Cataloger's note: It's all about Pansy. Although I (countrylife) own many Pansy books, this is essentially a ~virtual~ library, documenting the many editions of her work.

ABOUT THIS PROFILE:
Because I suspect that most people who land here will be Pansy seekers, rather than LibraryThing browsers, I am addressing my profile to my fellow Pansy fans. This will result in a longer-than-normal-profile, with all these catalog notes, but I place it here, rather than on my LT wiki where they may not find it, because I want those non-LTers to be able to use the information within this library.

ABOUT THIS LIBRARY:
To describe how this library was entered: Basically, I’m working with two sets of information – (1) the data, and (2) the covers. (1) The data comes from the various libraries from which the books were added (LT works with selected libraries world-wide which allow their data to be searched, and that is how you assemble your own catalog here.) (2) The cover pictures are books which I have scanned, or from pictures which I’ve been saving for years. So, the goal was to import as many Pansy books as I could find, from the libraries which had those records. Then, to attach the appropriate covers (and any other information about that edition which may have come with the cover pic) to the correct entry. Sometimes, the data and the cover information align perfectly, and I can make a match in the catalog. Oftentimes, covers would appear without any identifying information; also, the British libraries often did not list the name and/or date of publication, so those are largely guessed-at matches. The less information available from either libraries or covers, the more likelihood of an imperfect resultant match in this catalog.

******************* VIEWS ****************************

I’ve chosen a preferred view. It says “Chautauqua.girls has a suggested style for viewing this library” – click on (use it). It will show these columns: cover, title, author, date, publication, comments, and collections. But LT is so rich in the ways you can see the data, that I spell out some other possibilities here:

~~~Style Buttons~~~
Viewing the complete library via LibraryThing pre-set “styles”. Click any style, A-F, to view the library in that fashion. If you are not logged in to LT, the columns displayed within each style are:
A: cover, title, author (first last), date, tags, rating, comments
B: cover, author (last, first), title, date, tags, rating, google books
C: title, author (first last), publication, LC classification, entry date
D: cover, title, tags, comments, entry date
E: title, tags, LC Classification, subject, isbn
If you are a LibraryThing member and logged-in while viewing this library, then when you click on those buttons, it will display any of the A-F styles as you have them set up in your own library.
[By the way, if you haven’t done so already, consider entering your own books on LT. You can then see your library with up to 12 columns of information displayed. And you can set your styles to show any combination of these available columns: --- cover, title, author (first last), author (last, first), more authors, date, --- tags, collections, --- combo, comments, private comments, reviews, rating, --- summary, subjects, publication, --- languages, original language --- ISBN, LC class, LCCN, OCLC, Dewey Decimal, entry date, source --- date acquired, date started, date read --- BCID --- CK: series, canonical title, original pub date, important places, important events, people/characters, awards, publisher’s editor, dedication, first words, last words, quotations, epigraph, blurbers --- Work: Title & Author ---]
~~~Collections~~~
Because the new collections feature does not allow for sub-collections, I divided my category sections using certain asterisked collection titles as category dividers. In order to make the category label show up on this profile, a book had to be entered into those collections. Disregard the book entered into collections that have asterisks in their names. They are only there to force the label to show up.

These are the categories:

~~~Searches~~~
Covers per title: To see all the found-so-far covers of one title together on one page, along with its publication information, go to the search box (the empty box next the box which says “all fields” – on the “Your Library” pages) and enter a short distinct version of the title, ie: for “The Master Hand, or One Commonplace Day” – type commonplace… To see the covers of the different publishers sorted together for that title, click the “publication” column header, which will sort the publishers alphabetically.
You can also see all the covers for a book (but without the publication information), by clicking on the title of any book in the catalog, from whence you are taken to the “work” page for that book. If you add your own Pansy books into your own library on LT, then click on a title, you are taken to the main “work” page; in the far right column, click on “see all covers”, to see all the covers uploaded by members for that title. Or, if you want to add ~your~ Pansy covers in this library, email me at harthobbies *at* live.com. I can attribute you in the comments field of that edition (or not, if you prefer).
****************** MISC. LIBRARY NOTES ************************
Other Notes:
You can ignore the tags. In this particular catalog, tags are used for the purpose of maintenance; for keeping track during the process of linking cover photos with libraries’ publication data.
All books with the tag “scanned”, I own, but not all books that I own were scanned.
Because Faye is so closely intertwined in Pansy’s life and with her writing, some of her books are listed here as well (just as I happened to run across the data or covers – not trying to build a comprehensive list as I’ve tried to do with Pansy). Same with Marcia and Raymond.
Lastly, please remember that this library is a work in progress. I am continually on the look-out for information to help me update my data. Do you see any mistakes here? Do you have an idea to better organize this data? I welcome all suggestions.
************** EXPLANATIONS OF MY COLUMNS *******************************
~~~Date column~~~
The date provided by a library as part of the edition information at the time of import - which I call in these notes and in my library – the Data Source date. This date is auto-populated in the date column.

Handled thusly:
Cover with publication date provided: if different, I changed the date column to show the cover date.
Cover with no pub date provided – add a “u” (undated cover) to the Data Source date.
Cover with the only date provided being an inscription date – enter that date followed by an “i” (inscription).
Place holder covers: Data Source dates left unchanged.
No dates from either data or cover info, have entered guessed-at dates, in order to have a semblance of date sorting, followed by a “?”.
Copyright vs. print dates: In many of these old books, there is no print date listed. Knowing that some of the dates given will be the copyright dates, rather than the printing dates, and since the printing date would then be a guess anyway, I use the only date available.
On the adult booklist books, in order to facilitate date sorting, if any dates in the date column were different from the original publication dates, entered the original date, followed by an “o’’.

~~~Publication column~~~
The publication data applicable to the edition chosen during “add book”. Auto-populated at import. This is generally comprised of: city of publication, publisher’s name, publication date. Sometimes, some of these are included as well: format (hardback / paperback), copyright date, number of pages, first edition info, author’s copyright version info, whether illustrated, size.
Since I’m trying to marry the covers with the data and there is such a possibility of mis-match which may need corrected later, I’m trying to keep both sets of information intact. Therefore, I’ve kept the populated info there, including the data source date, even if different from the cover-date changed in date column. And even if the cover pic by doesn’t match the data pub. Anything I added to this field is indicated in brackets { }. While trying to leave intact the publication info that came with the addition of the edition, sometimes when trying to add something to the field (number of pages, etc), the computer would time out and I would lose the original information. In those cases, re-input as best I could figure out.
Since many of the European data sources don’t show a publisher (& often no date), for the European editions, the covers are matched to the data listings with wild guesses.
Also, have added the publisher name FIRST into this field (but without brackets) for sorting purposes. (newer reprints are small cap, older publishers are large cap.)
~~~Author column~~~ Auto-populated from the import library. Left as is (if it makes sense). If it’s mixed up, changed to lower case & noted original in comments. If no author listed, I add in lower case.

~~~Title column~~~ Auto-populated from the library of import. If series listed there, remove it & add to tags. Anything I add to title (clarifiers, original titles, etc.) is in brackets { }.
~~~Cover column~~~
The covers are individually added by me (for the most part), in attempt to match to the correct edition. Some newer reprint covers are auto-populated, with the ISBN of the cover picture linking itself to the ISBN auto-populated within the data. Place holder covers are wild guesses as to correct cover style for specified edition.

About Me
Isabella Macdonald Alden. Excerpted from her book, "Memories of Yesterdays", recalling the occasion of the publication of her first book, having been the winning manuscript of a contest for stories: "...I want to put on record whenever I have a chance, the fact that we never for one moment believed that there could be any children anywhere who had nicer times than we had. As grown people, looking back, we all knew - and I, left here alone, the others having all reached home before me, know to-day that there could never have been a more faithful, conscientious, earnest, loving father and mother than God gave to us. But so changed is the estimate of relative values to-day that I think it will hardly be possible, at least for young people, to understand or appreciate the wild heart throbs with which I made two packages each containing the enormous sum of twenty-five dollars [the prize money], and carefully placed each inside a bound volume of my first book. On the fly leaf of one was written "Presented to my honored father"; the other read: "To my precious mother"; and in both, the wondrous words that must have trembled with excitement, and ought to have been written in capitals: "From the Author."

I am grateful to-day for the gracious reception by the public of the many books that have borne, through the long chain of years, that same pen-name "Pansy." But I know that the multitude of men and women who to-day have precious memories of fathers and mothers, will understand and appreciate the peculiar thrill of joy which was mine that day.
