Sobre Minha Biblioteca

As Esmé Jameson says in The Day of Small Things by O. Douglas, 'library is too fine a name for my modest collection'.

In The House that is Our Own Kitty says: ‘I like ordinary books best, in open shelves, close to my hand , that I can browse amongst ... fiction, poetry, history, fairy-tales!’ Isobel replies: ‘The books I possess are my own choosing, books I liked and wanted to have.’

My tastes seem mainly to centre on women’s fiction from the eighteenth century to the twentieth century. There are some male authors in my collections because as Charlotte M Yonge wrote in Countess Kate “you can’t do things without boys.”

My reviewing policy (such as it is) is only to review books without existing reviews or if I disagree (strongly) with reviews already posted. I’m going to try to avoid star ratings as it isn’t really fair on authors because it could just be me on a bad day when they have slaved for months on their books. As Jean Jardine says in Penny Plain ‘I wonder how critics can bear to do it. I couldn’t sleep at night for thinking of my victims.’ ‘You sentimental little absurdity! It wouldn’t be honest to praise poor work,’ Pamela Reston returns. Jean shook her head. ‘They could always be a little kind.’

Lady Bidborough has a 'small panelled room with a view of the lawns and river' in her house Mintern Abbas in Penny Plain by O. Douglas. 'I am glad of this room. It has such a kind feeling. The other rooms are lovely, but they are meant for crowds of people. This says tea, and a fire and a book and a friend - the four nicest things in the world.'

My books to run away with (not sure who with but possibly someone like Anton Walbrook) are: Elizabeth Gaskell's Cranford, The Brontes Went to Woolworths by Rachel Ferguson and Wise Children by Angela Carter. Plus one jar of homemade raspberry jam, large slice of fruit cake, flask of tea, a box of Smarties and a ticket to... to Mintern Abbas.

Motto: "With my friend and my book, I walk through the forest of Arden."
