Sobre Minha Biblioteca
As an elementary teacher, I find using literature in my classroom THE most effective way to teach almost everything. I even use it for math whenever possible. Typically, I begin whatever unit I am doing with a selection that is somehow related to that topic. I have many favorite authors and illustrators and find it difficult to choose just a few! Tomie de Paola wrote and illustrated two of my favorite books; Clown of God and Nana Upstairs and Nana Downstairs. More than the stories, I enjoy his illustrations. I think it is more of a nostalgic love than anything else because I read many of his books when I was a child. Chris Van Allsburg is another author and illustrator whose work I have enjoyed for many years. My favorite book of his is Two Bad Ants which appears in the basal reader my school uses. Another of his books that I teach with is The Mysteries of Harris Burdick. This book is full of pictures without a story. I use this as a starting point when teaching narrative writing. I’m very fond of Patricia Polacco whose story Thank You, Mr. Falker is an inspirational story specifically for teachers.
While all of the books I've listed for use in my classroom are picture books, there are many other books I consider among my favorites. Eragon by Christopher Paolini was brought to my attention during my school’s book fair long before the movie came out. Fantasy is my favorite genre and this book has everything I love about Fantasy... fantastic storyline, well imagined and thought out settings, and well developed characters. Paolini is able to bring his characters to life which for me, is the most compelling part of any novel. Some other current YA favorites of mine are Twilight, New Moon, and Eclipse written by Stephenie Meyer. She is a new author and has only published a small number of books. The largest appeal for me is again, the character development. Unlike Paolini though, her genre is more romance/supernatural. She has delved into an aspect of vampire stories that is not often seen in YA fiction. In addition to my own enjoyment, my 13 year old daughter who is a reluctant reader devoured each of the three books immediately after I finished them. Any author that can do that for my child is worth my attention!
About Me
I’m currently enrolled in my second course in YA literature, the first of which was with Dr. Dresang this past summer.
As a child, I escaped through books. Sometimes it was a means to get away from my day to day problems but mostly, it was a way to explore new worlds and get lost in someone else’s story. My stepfather and I shared a love of young adult literature so he always brought fantastic books home for me to read such as The Pigman by Paul Zindel, Ordinary People by Judith Guest, and I Am the Cheese by Robert Cormier. Most of what he brought me was considered controversial and much of it had been challenged. I felt he was genuinely interested in what I thought and this was a bridge for us; it still exists today.
