This is a story for the boys who never quite make the grade. Whithem is a ruckman in a local team having to face up to an opponent 6” (13cm) taller. Suitable for YA readers.

Jim Vasalopoulos was a child immigrant, who found footy was a good means to become part of the Australian crowd. As an adult, his love of footy helped him to find a unique way to promote his supermarket. This story was written in the 1990s, so today offers young readers a great chance to play “spot the historical footy players”. Suitable for YA readers. Also published in Viewpoint: On Books for Young Adults, vol. 6, no.4 Summer 1998, p. 3.

One weekend a country football team short of players, finds a new player who takes on the coaching role as well. He is a stray who wandered in from off the highway. The team weren’t sure what hit them, but they loved his whacky approach to the game. Amusing and lighthearted tale of country footy, but a touch confusing at times. Suitable for YA readers.
