The Sky Unwashed de Irene Zabytko
I gave this book four stars, despite the pedestrian writing, because it manages to be a feel-good book even in the face of government lies, cheating spouses, radiation sickness, starvation and death. Like Faulkner's people, these villagers endured. Not just endured -- enjoyed the paltry slice of life left to them.

CarmenMilligan | outras 6 resenhas | Jan 18, 2016 | Luba, hoping to become more American herself, is determined to break free of her (Ukrainian) Post-war Displaced Persons status. In Chicago's Ukrainian village, she yearns for freedom and the ability to flee her stifling culture and the "old ways" of her parents.
From the inside flap of the dustcover jacket:
...a bright new chapter to the classic story of how the children of America's melting pot grow up strong enough to carry their double identities.
