I read this book using THE CLOUD... which is to say that I did not download it to my bulging Kindle but read it on my Mac.

I thought this was a one of the better 99-cent-and-under books that I've acquired. The pictures were good and the text was well done. And given how good the text is --a succinct sentence to accompany every photo -- I was surprised that the book wasn't better organized. In format, it's sort of like random information cards. So that you won't, for example, find all the information on pups in one place.

Age Group: From adults on down to preschoolers --if they have a casual interest in wolves.
--Some sentences are simple, some are not.
--The photos should appeal to all. And there is nothing that I wouldn't have shown my little ones.
--Things are sometimes described in centimeters and centigrade, and without a reference. For example, there's a cool discussion of the size of a wolf's foot(print) but no image of a foot or print, nor any drawing/image to actually give the reader some sense of scale.

Overall though, a VERY entertaining book at a wonderful price. Definitely recommend.

TECHNICAL OBSERVATIONS
--on my Mac there was a blank page between each page with wolves and text. I didn't find it annoying, and your experience may vary. (That's just how the internet is.)

This is the second book I've read in this series. The first was on wolves and I gave it 4-Stars: considering that to be a reasonable rating for that particular free book as a younger child turning the pages might be entertained.

This book isn't as good. Besides suffering from a lack of organization --which was true of the Wolf book-- this one also suffers from the pictures that aren't as interesting. Some of the crabs, for example, are difficult to make out and many of the pictures have a 'muddy' aspect.

And whereas it wasn't a problem that each image in the wolf book was labelled, in this book a variety of crab types were shown, but with no real effort was made to name them, which is part of what I think younger readers would be interested in learning.

Added to this rather bleak description is the fact that the book does not focus on the most interesting aspects of crabs, but instead talks about how many pounds are caught and consumed each year. Facts which I am certain as a mom have little appeal to younger readers.

So no, I would NOT recommend this book for younger readers. The pictures just aren't that appealing, and youngsters aren't likely to be interested in how many pounds of crab are eaten yearly, and that females let the eggs within them mature before fertilizing them.

TECHNICAL OBSERVATIONS
-- I read this book using THE CLOUD... which is to say that I did not download it to my Kindle, but read it on my Mac.
--on my Mac the formatting was messed up. The text did not appear on same page with the image and I think this would make for a confusing read for younger children.

What a great and informative book about aardvarks. They can walk up to 18 miles in a night as they search for termites or ants. They can eat 50,000 termites in one sitting. (they do keep the population or termites down that way). The pictures are wonderful and show the aardvark in captivity and in the wild.
