This is a fascinating little book about the transformation of the American Navy from the rusting, corrupt malaise it found itself in after the Civil War, to a modern, visionary, steel behemoth it became in the years leading up to and after the Spanish American War. The book also focuses on the role Roosevelt played in the development of the Navy as assistant secretary and then as president.

American Library Association's Booklist stated "Wimmels Foreign Service career equipped him with an intimate knowledge of Asia and a Kenn awareness of its history. The American Association for the Advancement of Science gave it its highest rating for adult books good at the high school level. Well Illustrated. Full Disclosure comment: Ken was a good friend and I published the book & shot a few of the photos in the book. The rest of the photos came from museums and libraries around the world.
