A Biographical Dictionary of the Twentieth-Century… de Alastair Wilson

This is a really useful book for anyone interested in the modern Royal Navy since 1900. Not only does it contains an alphabetical index of Admirals of the Fleet and Admirals ('full' Admirals), but the introductions with its overview of the types of entry (schemes) of Naval Officers, the Branches and Specialisations and their ranks and promotion, are not often brought together as they are here and, therefore, the text of this book helps with a wider understanding of the system as a whole.

Great Historical Resource

OK anorak warning as this book for those of us who really are into the minute details of everything historical and biographical. When you first get hold of this book look at the grand title A Biographical Dictionary of the Twentieth Century Royal Navy Volume 1 Admirals of the Fleet and Admirals you first think that either Navy has skimped on a few Admirals or very few made the rank from the 1900s. With only 88 pages you think you have been short changed but on the inside cover at the back is the CD with all the information you could ever need.

The book provides the history and context for the CD along with the meanings and abbreviations but far more importantly it gives the full biographical and service records of those who rose to the rank of Admiral. This really is a fantastic resource for any Naval Historians and naval warfare, and the CD is fantastic!… (mais)
