Megan K. Williams

If you want a book recommendation, may I recommend short stories by Megan Williams, entitled Saving Rome. I took it out from the Edmonton Public Library. In one of the stories, a young couple from North America moves to Italy. One of them has a job in the tourism industry but the couple sometimes expresses they are glad they are not tourists themselves. They start a blog and tell everybody among their friends back home how they are now living in the greatest place in the world and come and see us some time, any time. One small problem, their friends all do start coming, and crashing at their (the Italian residents') flat for a couple days or a week. It wouldn't be such a problem except some of the peripheral friends who visit the blog start inviting themselves, or their friends that the couple in Italy isn't even acquainted with. The tourist guide husband has a big job promotion try-out coming up and he has a major run-in with a guest whom he feels to be a basket case of uselessness. It is very funny. If you get a chance I think you might laugh at every story. I did anyway.

I guess it is almost a cliche, but I loved every minute of it. The story of a harried mother driving home in Rome supper hour rush hour traffic and her two toddlers are causing mayhem in the back seat. She can't believe her luck when she sees a free parking spot in front of their apartment building. After an illegal manouevre to successfully nab the spot before someone else gets it, a nearby carbinieri (I think that's like our equivalent of a police constable) tells her she has to move-one of the VIP residents of her building has had a bomb threat. She grumbles while she is re-parking. She eventually makes a rude gesture to the policeman. That is when the fun really starts.… (mais)
