This is the first in a sci fi series featuring a "murderbot" - part human, part robot (to simplify) - designed to provide security for humans. It seems to be sometime in the future when different groups of humans are exploring new worlds and places to live.

This is not my usual fare, but I bought it for my 14 year old son who usually likes sci-fi type books. I read it because he wanted to talk about it. Neither of us really liked this. We both felt that the author just dumped us in to the middle of the situation without giving enough background or time for world-building. Maybe if you read more of this genre there were cues that I didn't pick up on? It's very short, and to me it felt more like an outline of the major plot points of the story that then the author should have gone back through and filled out with detail, character development, flashbacks, etc. I also didn't find the murderbot charming or funny like I've heard places. I though of it as a woman, fellow Club Read-ers. :-)

Lots of people love this, so don't let me put you off!

Another entry in the Murderbot universe, which is about rescues and escapes on several levels. Murderbot is part of an effort to rescue colonists from a dangerous planet as well as predatory corporate efforts to conscript them as slave labor.
It also has to escape the same corporation on a mission gone wrong, saving its own humans along the way.
Although I liked the book, I found it difficult to get immersed. The very abrupt start, picking up pretty much where the previous book ended, and the ongoing references to events in previous books, made me feel disoriented. As if the author (whom I generally adore) had broken the author-reader contract implicit in the kind of series named "Murderbot diaries", and that particular length (mostly novellas, and short novels) ie. books that are loosely connected but can stand on their own.… (mais)

Despite having run away from ProtectionAux and Dr. Mensah, our SecUnit continues to feel loyal, and as the lawsuit against GrayCris starts to fall apart SecUnit decides to go to another planet where GrayCris has done some shady terraforming and try to gather more evidence against them. No longer using the self-appellation Murderbot after finding out what really happened on the extra-galactic moon in the last book, SecUnit uses the alias of Security Consultant Rin to shadow an investigatory team headed for the partially terraformed, and now abandoned, planet of interest. She tries to dupe a "pet" robot named Miki that considers itself the team leader's friend in order to tag along in the shadows. But in exchange for not telling others about it, Miki makes Rin promise to help protect the humans in the team. Rin agrees and gets hip deep into the ensuing action.

I love the voice of "sci-fi's favorite antisocial." Murderbot/Rin is so sarcastic and funny, yet vulnerable at the same time. First with ART and now with Miki, you see MB struggle with what it means for a machine to be in relationships with humans. From pain-in-the-ass clients to colleagues to friends, are these types of relationships possible? For MB, even being friends with a nonhuman seems a stretch. Although I liked the interactions with ART in the last book, I liked this book more overall. The action was faster paced, and I could almost seem the wheels in MB's head turn as she watched the interactions between Miki and Abene. Great series!

A fun story, and the twist of an A.I. just wanting to basically watch Netflix instead of doing it's job gives it a very unique flavour.

The action is engaging and the problems the characters face always keep things moving.

There are greater, meatier, questions about the nature of A.I. in this universe that I found myself asking, and though I can tell that this story isn't meant to or interested in answering them, I found myself asking them nonetheless, which caused a small hiccup for me. Not enough to avoid jumping to another book in the series, though!… (mais)
