YA: ELIZABETH WEIN David Ho YA: Elizabeth WeinWednesday, April 8, 7:00 p.m. Black Dove, White RavenWe are ridiculously excited to be hosting Elizabeth Wein for her new book, Black Dove, White Raven. As poignant as her award-winning and bestselling Code name VERITY, and as complex as Rose Under Fire, Elizabeth Wein’s new novel Black Dove, White Raven presents a captivating and deeply affecting story that explores race, family, the bonds of friendship, the resilience of young pilots, and the strength of the human spirit. to persevere through adversity. Emilia and Teo's lives changed in a fiery, terrifying instant when a bird strike brought down the plane their stunt pilot mothers were flying. Teo's mother died immediately, but Em's survived, determined to raise Teo according to his late mother's wishes-in a place where he won't be discriminated against because of the color of his skin. But in 1930s America, a white woman raising a black adoptive son alongside a white daughter is too often seen as a threat. Seeking a home where her children won't be held back by ethnicity or gender, Rhoda brings Em and Teo to Ethiopia, and all three fall in love with the beautiful, peaceful country. But that peace is shattered by the threat of war with Italy, and teenage Em and Teo are drawn into the conflict. Will their devotion to their country, its culture and people, and each other be their downfall or their salvation? Kidliterate Book Club Join us for a wide-ranging conversation in a new kind of book club. We'll be reading one book a month (children's or young adult fiction). Titles will be very carefully selected. We'll seek out books that push the boundaries of what kidlit is "supposed to do." Preference will be give to stories that some might call "edgy" or "controversial." Books that offer exposure to the world our kids are growing up in, as well as imaginary landscapes.
These will be books that might scare other parents. Books with "language" and "mature content." They may be "upsetting" books. The kind of books that "give kids ideas."
We like ideas.
We believe that books are the very best place for kids to encounter scary things and foreign concepts. We believe that books can help prepare kids to engage with the world around them. We believe kids are smart and resilient, great at asking tough questions. We believe they should.
But we also just like reading kids' books.
So come if you like amazingly good books! Come if you'd like to be introduced to titles you might not otherwise read! Come if you think books should stir the pot. Come for a new an way to screen your child's summer reading! Come if you want to argue with us!
