Tim Weed is the author of WILL POOLE’S ISLAND (“This riveting portrayal of early Colonial New England shines a speculative but compelling light on the time and place.” — Kirkus). He is the winner of a Writer’s Digest Popular Fiction Award and has been shortlisted for the New Rivers Press Many Voices Project, the Autumn House Fiction Prize, and the Lewis-Clark Press Discovery Award. Based in Vermont and Nantucket, Tim is a lecturer in the MFA Writing program at Western Connecticut State University and a featured expert for National Geographic Expeditions.

I thought this was an interesting exploration of life in colonial New England in the 1640s. Will Poole, the protagonist, lives in a small English settlement in Connecticut and regularly butts heads with his caretaker and other superiors in the community. He has interesting relationships and interactions with local Native Americans, which spur the main trajectory of the story. I marked this book as 3/5 because there were some significant plot points that were never really explained. Also the mystical nature of the Native Americans is a trope that has long been used in historical writings (both fiction and nonfiction) and I thought that idea could have been approached more effectively here. Overall an interesting and quick read using vivid description to help situate the reader in the narrative's events.… (mais)

MAGICAL....and i don't mean the abracadabra kind....but magical in that the author's words fill your mind with awe and wonder.

It's the story of Will Poole whose life was spent among the Puritans and their restrictive lifestyle. At the same time, as a young teenager, he feels a pull to the freedom of the local "savages". So his life is divided till he ultimately has to make difficult choices.

Will Poole's Island has us take a look at our own limitations, and assumptions of what is and is not possible!… (mais)
