I found this story fascinating, though not exactly an easy read. I gather the writer is more of a scholar than a writer for the masses. Nonetheless, I found the story compelling, though perhaps partly because of my interest in the subject matter. It begins with a topic I love -- railroads. It deals with issues of bias and injustice that still resonate today. There is an element of mystery -- what exactly happened, and where are the bodies? And it has the added intrigue of a paranormal element.

A map of the area (as one reviewer suggested) would have been nice, but I fully understand why it was omitted -- since the piece of land in question is private property, and the site of an archaeological study, it would hardly be suitable to have masses of readers descending upon the spot.… (mais)

The subject has the potential to be interesting, but this is a very dry, dissertation-like treatment. AND THERE'S NO MAP!! to show just where Duff'y's Cut is -- INEXCUSABLE!! There are also no good pictures of the area -- a very detailed multi-page written description in an appendix, which notes the exact spot which is "the single vantage point in the valley where all of the work of 1832 is visible" (p. 147) -- so where's the picture?!?
