At the age of 5 he began his first job as a water boy for a railroad construction crew. He moved to Colorado in 1880 and hired on, first as a general laborer and then as a fireman and engineer on the Denver and Rio Grande Railroad. In the late 1880’s he began writing poems and short stories about working on the railroad. He worked for several newspapers in Colorado the last being The Rocky Mountain News. He left the newspaper and moved, first to Washington D.C. and then to London, Ontario Canada. He became a staff writer for the Minister of the Interior of Canada in 1905. His first book was “Tales of an Engineer” which was published in 1895. He and his wife, whom he met in Canada, traveled in Europe in the first decade of the 20th Century. In addition to books his writings include poems and articles for many of the major magazines of the day and advertising copy for railway pamphlets. He died in Chicago, Illinois.
