Essentialist, uncritical usage of phrases like ‘the Chinese know’ and ‘China wants’; weirdly starry-eyed about Xi Jinping and his Dream; does not discuss the oppression in Tibet and the concentration camps in Xinjiang despite raising the importance of Central Asia; barely discusses China’s irredentism in the South China Sea despite its important to the book’s argument. Focusses too much on ‘traditional’ culture, ignoring the fact that all party cadres and government officials have to attend training and regular retraining at party schools.
