Resenhas

Well above average collection of M.R. James inspired ghost stories by British writer Walter. The ghosts are always malevolent and the guilty and innocent suffer equally. These ghosts are going to exact their bloody retribution on whoever happens to be around. Innocent curiosity usually is the culprit that leads our protagonists into their unfortunate encounters. Walter typically keeps the end well hidden until she's ready for you to know it, and these are delightfully surprising.

This lady wrote the superbly chilling "In the Mist" as well as the title short story which lent its title to the book. If you are looking for an example of the scary things of the thirties and forties, this book does well as an example.

stories: The Sin Eater / Dearest Clarissa / A Scientific Impossibility / A Question of Time / The Spider / Exorcism

I thoroughly enjoyed these creepy stories, particularly the titular two ("The Sin Eater," about the Welsh folk custom to ensure the peaceful sleep of the dead and "A Scientific Impossibility," about scientists confronted by the supernatural).

The whole time I was reading "Dearest Clarissa" (written in the form of letters from an institutionalized woman to her sister), I experienced deja vu, but I still can't say whether I'd read or heard of this story before. Maybe it was made into a movie or Twilight Zone episode, or merely anthologized elsewhere.

Despite its title, "Exorcism" is actually a comical read. This final story provides a comparatively light and upbeat ending to an otherwise creepy collection.
