I simply could not get anough of these as they began to appear on Facebook, Instagram, and elsewhere as the Covid quarantine settled in. Witty, hilarious, inventive and endlessly creative, people ransacked their cupboards and closets to stage-manage dozens of famous works of art, re-enacting them for their cameras with themselves, their kids, cats, dogs, toilet paper rolls, Lego people and pasta. The Getty Museum has assembled them in this little book, showing the original art inspiration and one or more of the populist versions. The illustrations are also on the small side, so sit down with a good light, and marvel. Some made me laugh till I cried (p. 123). Vermeer should be beaming at what his girl and her pearl earring have wrought (p. 55 took my breath away), and some should make the original artists wish they'd thought of that (p. 119). I'm still thinking I can get my border collie to help me with Andrew Wyeth's Master Bedroom... maybe the next edition. Tremendous fun!… (mais)

Off the Walls: Inspired Re-Creations of Iconic Artworks from Getty Publications is a fun collection of some of the quarantine driven responses to a challenge to remake classic art with whatever was at hand. These range from humorous to at least one I found beautiful in its own right.

This may well be one of the few good things that we will carry forward when this pandemic is over, but it will be something that will remind us that not every second of every day was miserable, even if it feels that way sometimes.

Many readers will have seen some of the many pictures on their social media accounts, maybe not the ones in this book but similar, so I won't waste time with explaining the premise any further. The level of creativity displayed and the, it appears, degree of fun it invoked are enough reason to consider the challenges worthwhile. The smiles they brought to so many faces when they were posted just makes this a winning idea all around. To then collect some of the best as a reminder of how people can pull together makes this book a keeper.

I want to comment on two of the recreations that I was particularly taken by. There is a full page picture (thank you Getty for giving this image a full page!) of a recreation of Girl with a Pearl Earring that is simply stunning. I showed this to friends and we were all taken by the simple beauty of the picture. The other is of a painting I would not have expected too many people to even want to try to recreate, Hieronymus Bosch's The Garden of Earthly Delights. The recreation blew me away, so many items and they did a great job of not always trying to stick with exactly what was in the original but rather to often focus on maintaining shape and proportion.

While I highlighted two of the ones that I liked the best, I think there will be plenty that will appeal to everyone. Animals, children, beloved fruits and vegetables. So many great interpretations and substitutions. I highly recommend this.
