One of Admiral Ernest King's more notorious comments was, regarding the information that the man in the street should receive, was: "Don't tell them anything. When it's over, tell them who won." That the United States Navy didn't actually operate that way in World War II, and had come to field a rather sophisticated information and publicity apparatus is the story of this book. Not that this came easily, as the USN really felt no need to have such an apparatus until after 1918, when the rise of military aviation, political suspicion of the naval arms races, and a generally sour public attitude regarding preparedness as merely being an excuse for aggression and profiteering, forced the naval establishment to change their tune. The topics covered in this monograph include Adm. Moffett's war with Gen. Billy Mitchell for public awareness, how the USN handled assorted high-profile disasters, and a sometimes fraught relationship with the media and Hollywood, even with the Navy League, the USN's supposed civilian auxiliary.
