One Book, One county Varios lê-se de The Kite Runner. One Book, One County is underway in Sweetwater County and copies of the selected book “The Kite Runner” by Khaled Hosseini are circulating at libraries and throughout the community. Published in 2003, “The Kite Runner” is a novel with wide appeal set in Afghanistan in the mid-1970’s, during the final days of the monarchy to present day. The committee coordinating the event has scheduled several opportunities to discuss the novel. Coming events include showing the movie based on the book, book discussions, and programs about the Middle East. All events are free and open to the public. The schedule is listed on the Sweetwater County Library System’s web site, http://www.sweetwaterlibraries.com under the One Book, One County logo. A blog is also available on the web page to discuss aspects of the novel. The first program takes place at White Mountain Library on April 8th at 7 p.m. It is titled “Democracy and Religion in the Middle East” presented by Seth Ward, a humanities scholar. The program is sponsored by the Sweetwater County Library System with funding from the Wyoming Humanities Council. Book discussions are scheduled at five locations during April. The Young at Heart Senior Center is the site of a discussion on April 8th at 12:30 p.m. Also on April 8th Marcia Hensley will lead a discussion at Mitch’s Café in Farson beginning at 7 p.m. The discussion at the Sweetwater County Library will take place April 10th at 7:00 p.m. Rock Springs Library is the site of the April 14th discussion at 6:00 p.m. The final book discussion is on April 23rd in the Hay Library of Western Wyoming Community College led by Rick Kempa, Associate Professor of English at the college. Two showings of the movie “The Kite Runner” are scheduled at the libraries during April. On Friday night April 18th the movie will show at White Mountain Library beginning at 6:00. Following the movie, two University of Wyoming professors will lead a discussion of the movie and the book. Paul Flesher teaches religious studies and Robert Torry teaches in the English Department at the University. Together they wrote “Film and Religion: An Introduction”, a new college textbook. The movie will show in Green River the following Friday on April 25th at 6:00. Prior to the movies, both locations will serve pizza and popcorn beginning at 5:30. All programs are free and open to the public. Other activities in conjunction with “The Kite Runner” are planned later in April with details to follow.
“The Kite Runner” is the story of a young Afghan boy Amir who is best friends with Hassan, son of his father’s long-time servant Ali. They are inseparable until Amir’s jealousy over his father’s attention to Hassan and guilt over an incident he witnesses drives Amir to betray his friend. After the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan, Amir and his father flee to California but Amir cannot escape his past and the guilt. Two decades later he returns to his homeland to redeem himself and finds out devastating news that puts his childhood in perspective. “The Kite Runner” is the story of friendship, betrayal, and redemption and the relationship between fathers and sons. The setting of the novel in Afghanistan, along with the United States’ involvement in the Middle East and the possibilities for understanding a different culture appealed to the committee.
The concept of One Book, One County as a county-wide book club is that people read one title during the same time period and talk about the book with others in public venues or private conversations.
A couple of sites available on the Library System’s web page go into detail about “The Kite Runner”. NoveList, a reader’s advisory, is found under “databases” on the index page at http://www.sweetwaterlibraries.com. The site has a biography of the author, a summary of the plot and discussion questions for groups that hold their own book discussions. There are also links to other related sites including author Hosseini’s site with news and reviews. The WYLD CAT, the Wyoming Libraries Database, also has a summary and reviews of the book.
One Book, One County is sponsored by the Sweetwater County Library Foundation, the Sweetwater County Library System, and Western Wyoming Community College, with support from the Rock Springs Area Community Foundation and Louise Wesswick.
