One warning – it does read a little as though the original story was written in another language and translated to English but that does not take away from the story in any way.
We start right off with Soviet Navy Captain Mikhail Makarov nursing his Tupolev TU-95 RTs (Bear D) towards a landing at Canadian Forces Base Goose Bay in Labrador. Unfortunately, he seems to be suffering from a classic case of running out of speed, altitude and ideas but before we discover what happens, the author swings us back to where the story begins.
In typical techno-thriller style we are led on an incredible adventure as the crew of Red 67 plot their escape from the draconian life they live on a Soviet Navy Airbase in the northern USSR. The novel’s character development is excellent and the reader soon finds themselves engrossed in the lives of these men who are risking everything to accomplish their mission.
You do need to plan your reading carefully, as once you reach the halfway point in the novel, putting it down is difficult, if not impossible.
Vargas-Caba has obviously spent a lot of time researching the Soviet Military in general and the TU-95 in particular. Having read about and studied all of the weapons appearing in the novel, nothing in the way of errors jumped out at me. I am sure other military historians will appreciate and agree that this seldom happens.
I highly recommend Bear: Flight to Liberty to anyone interested in military techno-thrillers or the Cold War in general. Reading how long Miguel worked on this novel, and it shows in the quality of his work, we hopefully will not have to wait as long for his next novel.
