The objective of this study was to develop a novel thermochemical conversion technique which uses direct solar radiation to rapidly pyrolyze the biomass particles. The reactor design and the heat and mass transfer in the system were utilized to effect chemistry which provides high yields of potentially valuable chemicals. The main thrust of this investigation emphasizes the design and operation of a new pyrolysis reactor capable of providing specific chemical end products.
