- Simone Téry was a daughter of French journalist Andrée Viollis and her first husband, Gustave Téry, a philosophy professor. She worked as a reporter for several periodicals such as L'Humanité, Vendredi, and Regards. In the 1920s, she traveled to Ireland and wrote two books about the country's struggle for independence from Britain and its culture. She became a member of the Communist Party in 1930, following a visit to the Soviet Union. She covering the Republican side during the Civil War in Spain, where she met and married Juan Chabás, an intellectual and leftist. In 1939, they emigrated to the Dominican Republic and later to Cuba. After separating from her husband, she returned to France, where she continued to work as a journalist and write books after World War II.
