Kenji Tomiki

More people that ever before are learning the art of judo with the greatest entusiasm, and even in foreign lands a surprising number of persons are becoming adept in it. Accompanying this internationally popular art, there has existed from olden times in Japan a conpanion art known as aikido (lit. the art of making one's spirit 'fit in' with the opponent's). In aikido greater importance is given to the technique of self-defense in time of dnager by teaching the student the vulneraabale points and important joints of the body, and showing him how to utilize that knoowledge to overocme hi oponent, at the expenditure of as litle force as possible. Mr. Tomiki, holder of the 7th dan (grade) in judo and the 8th dan in aikido, has explained here in practical manner all the major techniques of these two arts. The text is easy to understand because of the many pictures used, mostly showing demonstrations by the author himself. Particularly, his explanations and practical insturction in aikido are unique, foe he has succeeded in making a schientific and educational sukstematization of various ancient technique of aikido. There is no other English text on the subject. Mr. Tomiki, born in 1900, learned judo under the personal instruction of the late Jigoro Kano, fokunder of the workd-famous Kodokan Judo Hall in Tokyo. In 1953 he was invited to the United Stated to demonstrate the art of jkudo and aikido in 88 different places. In addition to his regular insturtion at his alma mater, Waseda University, he has taught many Japanese and foreign students how to apply effectively the many techniques of judo and aikido for self-devense.
