I admit that I am not a regular reader of poetry in volumes, merely being a devoted follower of a some few whose lines burn in my head after finishing them, make me laugh or shake or cry or twist my tongue and brain into knots...

The poem that does that for me in 'Skins', is "Every Poem a Celebration," which was read to me by my AP English teacher in high school and received rare unanimous approval from us.

I remembered two elements greatly: the feel of the heavy onset of summer marked by blooming flocks of plastic flamingos and the delight and giddy fun had reading: "Sun-struck, stuck in mid tropic strut..." I don't care where you are when you read something like that, you must - must - read it aloud.

The rest of 'Skins' is filled with similar word play and reinventions of the commonplace: divinity and profanity spun from Jerry Springer, playground slides and nylon stockings.

Poetry is about putting new eyes onto the reader, as the Stage Manager tells Emily, the poets and the saints may realize life while they live it - and maybe pass it on to us.
