The first part of this book, The Secret Cases, should have remained secret, wIth Holmes smug, haughty and impotent, unable to influence anything worthwhile. I kept reading, but every story had the same Holmes where we're lucky to get no more than one useless input each. Needless to say, I did not finish this book.

So-so collection of material on crime in Victorian-era England. The chapters on prostitution and pornography aren't terribly interesting, and while the chapters on burglary and murder are rather more interesting, it's pretty much a rehash of what you can find in other books. All right, but nothing particularly spectacular.

I finished this book a couple weeks ago and honestly I don't remember much of the story. It's an acceptable Sherlock book though.

He also found time to act as a mercenary Admiral, playing a vital role in the independence struggles of Peru, Chile, Brazil and also, latterly, Greece. There are darker aspects to Cochrane's story, who was involved in a murky stock Exchange scandal and was an unabashed admirer of Napoleon but, all in all, a very remarkable individual indeed.… (mais)
