In de vijftiende eeuw brachten de hertogen van Bourgondië vele vorstendommen in de Nederlanden onder hun gezag. Daarmee legden zij de basis voor de moderne staten Nederland, België en Luxemburg. De Bourgondische machtsovername leidde tot een snelle vernieuwing van bestuur, rechtspraak en financiën. In De hertog en zijn Staten staan het proces van de eenwording en het karakter van de unie centraal. Robert Stein beschrijft vernieuwing en continuïteit tegen het decor van de snel veranderende politieke, sociale en economische omstandigheden. Het succes van de Bourgondische dynastie wordt gespiegeld met het failliet van de oude vorstenhuizen en de teloorgang van het feodale bestuur. Op de achtergrond blijken de machtige steden een steeds belangrijker rol te spelen. Alleen met hun steun was de unificatie van de Nederlanden mogelijk, maar die steun gaven zij niet belangeloos.… (mais)
