This is a story of Josh, a dog who may not have begun his life as a wonder, but whomcertainly ended up that way, and of Richard, who recognized the potential in a not so lovely dog who, through love, became a wonder. This is Josh’s story, but it is more than that. It speaks of the dynamic between a person and a canine, how their bond was not severed even by a gunshot, and how their love spilled out to envelope another. A tender tale made even better by the many photos included in the book.

I had mixed feelings about this book after reading it. I liked the book because of the point of view from the dog, Josh. He is a mutt and wants to become a St. Bernard, which eventually he does. He loved the idea of saving someone’s life by finding them and bringing them a hot drink in his barrel. At the end of the story, Josh finds Santa buried in the snow and saves him and Christmas! On the other hand, I did not like this book due to the writing. Some pages were short paragraphs like in other children books but on other pages the text took up a page and a half. This would not have been an issue if they choose to publish the book in a different as it was harsh to read. But the book was in an organized manner and I did appreciate that. The main message from this book was that you do your very best and to believe in yourself when no one else does. This was important in the book because all the other dogs laughed and made fun of Josh for wanting to become a St. Bernard but he overcame that and was a “St. Bernard”.… (mais)

Steamer and Shelly Go To Pot is full of attention-grabbing illustrations. The bold pictures give a detailed view of each environment Shelly and Steamer travel too. During my elementary years, I was giving the opportunity to meet the author of this book; he autographed my personal copy of the text. I read this book cover to cover repeatedly. Today, I refer back to it numerous times for projects and lesson plans regarding the Chesapeake Bay and/or marine life. This book takes its audience on an adorable adventure to the bay, making anyone fall in love with the pure entertainment and story of Shelly and Steamer.… (mais)

Overall, I felt this was an ok book. It was locally published in Glen Burnie, MD. One of the elements that I enjoyed about the story was the content of the story. There was a lot of local information and is good way to get students interested about the environment around where they live. For instance, there was reference of the Chesapeake Bay and some of the islands around it. Second element that I enjoyed was the illustrations. They were all painted images and were very well done. For instance, the details on the crabs were very realistic and the images of the local areas such as islands and cliffs were very realistic. The third element that I found ok was the plot. The plot wasn’t as well developed as it could have been and I wish it would have mentioned some local features a little bit more. For instance, specifically stating which cliffs and islands they were looking at. In the end, I felt the main message of the story was to show children that they should listen to their elders because they’re usually experienced and can keep you out of harm.… (mais)
