Written with a very liberal slant, I found this book to be too biased in blaming the government for the woes of those left behind. While certainly, there is enough blame to go around, the lack of emphasis on personal responsibility was troubling to me.

Yes, in my opinion, the government did have a responsibility to help, but the flip side is that the government had helped many of the people of poverty for years by making them helpless and dependent. The government is at fault because they extended such a helping hand that there was a complacency and thus mindless inability to assist oneself. However, I did enjoy learning about Louisiana politics and history. And, I did appreciate the authors clear, concise depiction of the political machine in place that allowed a swamp land to be developed for the sake of the almighty dollar.… (mais)

Excellent and beautifully written. An account of the devastation and recovery of New Orleans as a result of Hurricane Katrina. Sothern shares his personal experience of New Orleans, before and after Katrina, along with well-researched history of New Orleans.
