The atmosphere was really the strongest part of this book, especially in the first half. It was so believable and that extended to some of the characters, namely: Lizzie, Zach, Nev, Spike, and Saj. However, it just about stopped there. The plot, the pacing, the rest of the cast, and the sloppy proofreading really distracted from that atmosphere and made what should have been a quick and engaging read boring and difficult, so much so that I put the book down and didn't pick it back up for almost two years. a post-apocalyptic novel with a bit of a religious bent to it, I ran through this novella pretty quickly but enjoyed it, found the characters pretty well developed and believable and I thought the storyline believable as well. Escaping an urban wasteland for the backwoods is a response I could understand. I was worried the religious bent would get out of hand but it never did and I would definitely pick up the next novella in the series.

Amidst a flood of dystopian, post-apocalyptic fiction, Toils and Snares stands out for quite a few reasons, especially the skillful character development. These are likable, human beings trying to find the best way out of the destruction of everything they have known. Trying to reach a secluded cabin in the Pacific Northwest is the best way Samuel can think of to preserve the vitality of his family. I found the title to be a good choice, with its reference to Amazing Grace, the Christian hymn, and the need for spiritual guidance in harsh, desperate times. Recommended. (less)… (mais)
