- Kaino Ihanelma "Nelma" Sibelius, née Swan, was born in Janakkala, Finland. She was one of nine daughters born to her parents Carl Gustaf Swan and his wife Emilia Malin. Her older sister Anni Swan became a famous children's writer.
Nelma married Dr Christian Sibelius, a professor of psychiatry with whom she had four children. He was the younger brother of the composer Jean Sibelius. After her husband died, she worked as a drawing teacher, writer for young people, and translator.
