4599. The Wool-Hat Boys Georgia's Populist Party, by Barton C. Shaw (read 23 Jul 2009) This book starts out rather ploddingly, but becomes more interesting as it gets into the events of 1892 and thereafter. Much attention is paid to Tom Watson, who the author correctly describes as "irrational." The book quite often cites C. Vann Woodward's magnificent biography of Watson, which I read Mar 5, 1995--such a contrast to the Watson biography by William W. Brewton, which I read 24 Oct 1952. It is distressing to realize that Negroes were more discriminated against in the early 1900's than they were in the 1890's.… (mais)
