Sharkchild's second collection of short fiction, assembled from his podcast stories. Once again, there is a tremendous amount of imagination on display here. Stories range from very modern, present-day, horror stories to weird, dream-space works, to dark, timeless, fantasy, bearing the apparent influences of writers like Lovecraft, Kafka, and Ligotti. In the Dark Verse, strange monsters step out from the interstices of reality, the realms of the afterlife, and the gloomy corners of people's deranged and damaged minds. Only a few things keep this from being a five star collection; firstly, the characters have generally no development. Quite often the narrator is simply an unnamed "I". To be fair, the stories make almost no demands of further characterization, the players act out their drama on the stage, the novelty of the situation, and the uniqueness of the antagonists, being the main attraction. Also, some of the sentences here get unnecessarily convoluted in structure, and prose is often highly elaborated in places where brevity might have served better. These technical issues don't generally impair the enjoyment of the inventiveness of the stories as a whole though, and I would recommend this book to any fans of weird fiction, Lovecraftiana, or horror.… (mais)

Sharkchild works primarily at short-story length, which I think serves his strange, imaginative visions well. At novel / novella length the story suffers a little, a large portion of the book struggles with pacing issues, seeming to just meander around the hometown of Amory, our protagonist, and introducing the locations and characters who are his friends and rivals. This portion of the book honestly reminded me of the early levels of a video game, setting the idyllic scene for when things get weird later. The story does start twisting and turning later though, with strange locations and histories providing a lot of interest from there. The back half of the book definitely builds on and takes the established parts of the story in new, strange, and dark directions and I feel like I would definitely read the sequel the subtitle suggests will be coming. All-in-all an entertaining story if you can stay with it through the slower opening chapters.… (mais)

This third volume of The Dark Verse continues in the vein of the first two, delivering strange and imaginative stories of horror, dark fantasy, and the weird. I consistently found them creative, even if sometimes the prose is a little unnecessarily convoluted in places where shorter, more straight-forward sentences might have worked better. Still I'd definitely recommend this collection to fans of weird fiction, cosmic horror, and stories steeped in dream logic.

A Unique Vision

An impressive first collection from author and podcaster M. Amanuensis Sharkchild. These are tales of twisted logic, ventures into strange realms, and encounters with incomprehensible entities. There is an impressive range of ideas and some genuine imagination on display here. The prose varies a little in quality, but colorful and varied vocabulary makes up for some of the rough spots. I would definitely recommend this book to readers of dark fantasy, horror, and weird fiction.… (mais)
