This is not a story of major historical proportion. Rather, we are presented a very well researched, quiet and graceful story of the minor nobility in 12th century France, when troubadours and crusades abound. Lying somewhere between realism and historical romance, the novel is more like a tapestry of its time and the way of life of the French lords. The beauty of the descriptions is unforgetable as are the glimpses into family life and relationships. Throughout the novel all characters seem to be one thing, but end up being another. Young readers may sympathize too much with Eloise as a victim, but considering the historical period she lives in, that is the normal way of life. That is what might prove difficult for some young readers - to put themselves in the reality of medieval times. It is definitely for older teens and adults.… (mais)
