I feel like Sager really tried something different with this one, and I enjoyed it! This one was much more straight-up "traditional" mystery than his recent novels, and I never felt like it was unsolvable, which made it even more fun to try and piece together as the story went on. The ending might be my favorite Sager ending even? The last couple chapters were delightful. My one gripe is that I wish there was a little more horror! Sager usually can get me a little wigged out but, as concerning as this got, there was never a point where I was actually scared...I love a good little midnight scare...but anyways, my favorite Sager since "Home Before Dark"!… (mais)

Rating: 4.5
A very refreshing, well-written, and modern feeling thriller! I think the pacing was a tad on the slow side and lagged about 3/4 in, but all in all I really enjoyed reading this. I felt like Sager did a good job balancing all the clues and puzzles, making it possible for the reader to work on solving the mystery but including a few surprises along the way. I definitely look forwards to reading more of Sagers work!

4.5 rounded up. I loved seeing Sager dip more into the ghosty, paranormal aspects of mystery writing; although I've enjoyed his other books it was also super enjoyable to see Sager veer away from the more psychological/murder stories and try something new! I had a lot of fun reading this, and was genuinely creeped out at times. The descriptions of the hauntings (and that freakin armoire) were truly chilling, and made even more tense by the back and forth POVs. I tend to like POVs that go back and forth in time, and Sager handled the format well.
I will say that I thought the story ended up being a bit anticlimactic. I ended up solving the "mystery" a bit over halfway through, and then the final scenes were kinda of tired. Like none of how it wrapped up surprised me at all, and would have like to be more shocked at the close. However, I really had a fun time reading it, especially the whole first half, and would certainly recommend it to other spooky book fans!

A pretty solid mystery, one that definitely reads like a slasher film, and plays around well with the Final Girl trope. I think the biggest downfall for me was that the first half of the novel is super slow. Sager’s writing style is good and very bingable but the plot itself drags awhile.
