I haven’t previously read anything by this author, and I was attracted by the “ex-FBI” background (as opposed to an amateur detective or lifelong card-carrying magician/supernatural).

Despite the mystery/police procedural setup, I got a strong slice of life vibe. We find out about Miller’s background, domestic circumstances and the eclectic mix of people/entities he lives with. They all have their own histories and are generally sympathetic characters with a strong sense of teamwork. In places, their loyal support seems a bit pat as they provide Miller with whatever he needs next. As Arcane Detective is first in a series, I’m sure we’ll be seeing more of them all.

The tension level is generally low, with occasional and fairly mild “nastiness.” You might appreciate this if you prefer your urban fantasy with less of a grim and gritty flavour.

REVIEW: “Asher shivered, acknowledging his backward metamorphosis from butterfly to worm. He was back in the cocoon now and wondered how he would know when it was time to emerge.” Asher had lived the dazzling life of a super star until his drug addictions took it all away. Now he is quietly trying to return after 2 years of clean and sober. However, someone is not happy with that. Bodies pile up while all clues point to Asher. He is frantically sifting through his prior life, trying to find the murderer. The gritty descriptions of the recovery process hit hard. A well written mystery with layers of deceit. Looking forward to the next book. This is my voluntary review of an Advanced Reader Copy of this book.

DESCRIPTION, NOT REVIEW: Asher was just learning how to be normal when the police came for him. They arrested him for murder. He was innocent, but all the evidence said otherwise. And his wild history as a Hollywood bad boy didn't help. An old friend was dead, and he was determined to find her killer without tumbling back into the rabbit hole of substance abuse. To get to the truth Asher realizes he must mend all his burnt bridges a lot sooner than he'd planned. When he turns to the people he trusted most, he discovers he must convince them not only of his sobriety but of his innocence.

A recovering addict actor, trying to make a comeback, surrounded by mischief... could be interesting! I started this book with mediocre expectations, but was pleasantly surprised! This was a very good read, all the bases were covered. We saw family intrigue, recovering addiction, current addiction, pain, violence, meth labs, we even got a strange woman showing up in a man's bed! Okay, that last one's not exactly what you're thinking, but... I really enjoyed this tale, it's worth a read!

I received a copy from Goodreads in exchange for an honest review.

This was a very well written book. I have not read the first book in the series, but this book was written in a way that a new reader could still follow the characters and the story was not dependent on the first book.

I really enjoyed the representation of addiction throughout the text as it brings up many of the hardships of addiction that occur even after a person stops using. I also liked that the book wasn't solely about Asher's addiction, but rather it came up during events of the story (especially stressful ones) to demonstrate the added pressure addiction has on everyday life (although Asher's adventures are far more stressful than the every day).

The story was suspenseful with a lot of characters that got a little hard to keep track of at times, but overall this was a good book.
