You might say this profusely illustrated book of people and places is interactive. Whenever you open it up and take a look at one of the photographs, whether it be a building, a statue or a natural wonder, you have to learn more! You go to other books, then the internet. Before you know it you're an expert on the subject matter! You can never get enough out of this book. It is of course a daunting task to have a select amount of pictures to represent a state or whole country. Most of the time I agree with their choice, but not always! For the most part the photos are a work of art. People and architecture are well represented. Many of the buildings shown are hundreds of years old. Customs and parades are shown as well. The captions under each picture are well worth reading. Not included are Russia, Poland, China and parts of Africa. As a bonus you also get to see the cruise ships and airliners of the time. Many sports pop up among the pages, but unfortunately baseball was overlooked. I've never come across a book like this, it's well worth hunting for!… (mais)

Two complete novels (The Royal Box and Jamaica Inn) and excerpts from other works that were popular in the early 1950's. Jamaica Inn (my rating *****) by Daphne du Maurier, originally published in 1936, remains one of the better novels I have read and I have read a few. Descriptions are superb. The Royal Box (****) by K.P. Keyes, a page turner, reminds me a lot of Agatha Christie in its style and form. Other works in this publication are excerpts of the original works.

This book was in my house when I was a child. I would browse through the pictures and dream of the places I wanted to see one day. It's well-worn now, but it's a book that I always want to keep in my library. Even though the pictures are black and white, this book still holds so many memories and still fascinates me.

A treasure for the Travel, History, and Vintage Aircraft, Cruise Ship and Train buff. Many of these bright, sharp Black & White photos seem to have come from the local tourist board and/or cruise/airline. The captions and accompanying paragraph for each nation, however do show significant research and familiarity with the area.
