In Double or Nothing: Two Lives in the Theatre, Thelma Ruby and Peter Frye provide a great oral history. While my personal interest in the book is related to Frye's service in Spain, I recommend it to those who enjoy reading history, military history, theatre, or memoirs.

In reference to being wounded and unable to return to service after his second battle, Frye wrote " I was not a good investment as a soldier. They lost money on me." I strongly disagree with Frye's position, not because of his contributions as a soldier, but, because of what he provides from a historical reporting perspective. As a combat veteran of Quinto and Belchite, Frye's very personal reaction to the war is unique. He is one of the few veterans to discuss the execution of prisoners. His reaction to this horrific event is worth reading.

Spain is only a small fraction of this book which primarily addresses Ruby and Frye's experiences in the theater. I enjoyed this element of the book as well. They offer insight into theater and the retelling of the actors' lives are engaging.

This is a book well worth reading.
