The definitive listing of all British military aircraft serial numbers, starting with Military Balloon No.1 in 1878 and with the last entry being for ZH200, the BAe Hawk 200 demonstrator, in 1987. Starting in 1912, all British military aircraft were numbered in a single sequence, and from 1916 an alphanumerical sequence was introduced starting at A1 and continuing to ZZ999. What happens then will probably be the subject of great internal debate in the MoD, assuming that everything hasn't been privatised by then. Of course, this book predates the Tory drive to outsource as much of the state as possible, and so the position relating to aircraft leased from the private sector had not reared its ugly head at that time. Certainly, the C-17 Globemasters currently leased to the RAF from the US Air Force are serialled in this sequence - something we may see more of if current public spending cuts continue.… (mais)
