- When about eighteen years of age he began the study of medicine under Dr. Plummer, finishing his course in Philadelphia. He began a country practice about thirteen miles from Pittsburgh about the year 1828. He also lived and practiced medicine in Carthage, Ohio, and in Wellsburg, Va. When in 1841, Bethany college was founded by Alexander Campbell, Dr. Richardson was elected as one of the professors. He filled this position for over twenty years, teaching the various branches of natural science. He also filled the position of vice president and professor of natural science in Kentucky university for four years, being called to that institution in 1858. He was also an author of note for the Disciples of Christ. He published Memoirs of Alexander Campbell, in two volumes; Principles of the Reformation Urged by A. Campbell and Others, in 1853; Communings in the Sanctuary, in 1872; The Office of the Holy Spirit, in 1873. He also contributed numerous articles to different religious journals. Gospel preacher, president and teacher at Bethany College, and author.

It is worth looking at his views ranging from bible translations to slavery to capital punishment to education, which were quite advanced & persuasive though controversial at the time. He traveled to the East as far as Boston, South as far as New Orleans & West as far as the Kansas Territory in his work as a preacher & as President of Bethany College which he founded in western Virginia.
As early as 1840, Mr. Campbell saw that the issue of slavery would end in war, though he hoped the issue could be resolved through discussions. His travels to the North, South, East & West are very descriptive & perceptive to see the state of affairs as he saw them during his travels.
His debates, most notably, the debate with the socialist Robert Owen was where he excelled. Very few were ever able to hold up against him especially in the debate with Owen who proved unable to persuade, insisting on vague principles rather than stand up to Mr. Campbell's withering evidences of the failures & shortcomings of socialism.
Overall, in spite of the over 1200 pages, a good read into a lost world in which a reader can get a glimpse.… (mais)
