Porter Smith runs a somehow-successful gambling operation out of a booth at the Night Owl Club, better known as the NIGHTMARE CLUB. He's a reluctant cadet at the Hudson Military Academy, graduating there would fulfil a promise he made to his dying father. It's his senior year now and he has raked in a LOT of money (even without factoring in ~30 years of inflation) on small-stakes bets, but some crude townies are looking to muscle in on the action. Under very real threats of force Porter agrees to partner with them. He's got to take ever-higher bets and even sells drugs and alcohol to keep them happy. Then there's that creepy room upstairs with the pentacle....

This was surprisingly decent. Porter Smith, once you accept that he's made that much money as a teen bookie, is pretty realistic in his response to danger and even tries to bring in the authorities. There's a lot of weirdness baked into the book, that I think has to do with the larger series. I think the publishers wanted to net those readers of R.L. Stine that wanted more gore and sex and less fake-supernatural B.S. This is the only book I've read of 'The Nightmare Club' and the only one written by Bruce Richards, so I can't say how it reflects on the series as a whole, but I will totally buy more of these when I see them. I would love it to turn out that these have shared characters, but I don't have much hope for that in any of these early YA series.

Freddy Krueger was barely in this at all. It was readable anyway, but Freddy seemed really tacked on.
