One of my favorites so far! Very sweet and a good mix of sad moments paired with the joys of community

First book in an early chapter book series, Salma Makes A Home had timely yet difficult themes, a bit surprising for an early chapter book.

Salma and her mother, both originally from Syria, have been living in Vancouver, Canada for almost two years and are awaiting the imminent arrival of Salma's Baba. Salma, while overjoyed to finally be reunited with her father, has lingering issues which are sure to be understood by recent immigrants: the missing of their former home/family/friends/traditions left behind while trying to get acclimated their new homes, languages and friends. Salma has the added burden of her anxiety of her fear that her Baba might not like Canada and wish to be separated again.

Illustrated with black and white art which enhances the story.

K-Gr 2—Facing loss and change, Salma wants to cheer up her mother, who is working hard in Vancouver while
Salma's father is still in Syria. Members of a community center rally around her, and a message of love and
acceptance is served up right on schedule.

Salma Writes a Book is the third book Danny Ramadan has written about Salma, a Syrian girl whose family emigrated to Canada. I have yet to read the other books: one a picture book and one a beginning chapter book as is Salma Writes a Book. Salma will soon become an older sister and wants to be the best sister she can be. She decides to write a book containing all the information she gathers from reading and asking questions of friends who have siblings. Salma runs into a problem with observations about sibling love when her mother's brother, whom the family last saw years ago, comes to visit. Salma's mother seems mad at Uncle Khalou about something and refuses to talk to Uncle Khalou about it.
The description of Salma's book, quotes, and illustrations is detailed and entertaining. The story is well-written; it depicts Salma's many sentiments stunningly. The book has many facets, including family, friendship, honor, cultural values, and honesty. I am impressed by the manner in which the author is able to convey a multitude of emotions and significance in simple writing.
A word of caution: the problems between Salma's mother and Uncle Khalou stem from his marriage to another man. The subject is handled gently and carefully, in a reasonable mode for young readers. This early chapter book is directed at children in grades 1-4. Parents may want to read this book before their children.
Once again, I am impressed with the quality of books published by Annick Press. They are leaders in issuing stories about people of varied ethnicities, nationalities, and other traits only sometimes presented in young people's books.
Thank you to NetGalley and Annick Press for the ARC of this book.
