Interesting essays from a slower-paced childhood

The author writes, in short essay form, about his family and experiences in the 70's and 80's. The stories are of a good length to provide background and perspective into the society and mindset of the era.

This is a most appropriate read for anyone born in the 60's or children of those born in that era. As a child of that time myself, I could totally relate to the stories! Roaming the neighborhood, playing outside, family adventures, and school antics are all covered to varying degrees.

All in all, this is a nostalgic look back in history. Fun, laid-back, and unpretentious words to trigger lots of memories!

I didn't grow up in the same state as the author, but I did remember some of the things he mentions. I also lived near there but in the late 80s so some of the regional stuff I knew as well (though sadly not Regent soda). Some of the stories and observations are a bit repetitive (mentioned in a couple different chapters) which makes me wonder if these were originally essays or columns that were meant to stand alone but now have been gathered into book form.

Mr. Purcell is a great storyteller. He can take any experience that you and I might cosider mundane and turn it into an enjoyable and humorous adventure. I was smiling constantly and laughed out loud several times while reading this book. It's a quick read and I did not want it to end.… (mais)
