More intense of a read than I thought it would be. I think Ms. Price goes 'beyond' what Neil Peart was actually trying to 'say' in some of the songs. Neil Peart's lyrics are very strong on opinion sometimes, but I don't think they all have some philosophical meaning that runs deep. It was an ok book, as my rating of only two stars signifies. If your into Kant, and Plato and such, this is for you. If you just love Rush, and just want to enjoy their 'message', this may be a little to much.

As a long-time fan of Rush (I actually say them back in 1982 at Birmingham NEC- and I have all the studio albums) and an occasional student of philosophy I was fascinated by the idea of this book.

To use it properly you really need to listen to the songs as you go along (I now have an appropriate itunes play-list!) and if you do the book makes quite an interesting read. Anybody who has listened to the music of Rush will know that this is rock and roll with a difference- references to sex and drugs are rare., and that Rush do have a clear 'message' about living a fully authentic humanity in harmony with the world, where science and commerce serve humanity, not the other way round. They haven't much time for organised religion in this vision, though Selby does point out places where religious imagery is used, sometimes quite explicitly, sometimes more by allusion.

The book is divided into seven chapters on themes and each is illustrated by a selection of songs (37 are looked at in detail)

Generally I found Selby's arguments interesting and cogent, though she goes off on tangents at times and occasionally she seems to go beyond the evidence.

All in all an interesting read for Rush fans, but probably not beyond that.
