5504. You Can Yell It! Coming of Age in Leeds, Iowa, by William K. Poston, Jr. (read 4 Oct 2017) This is a 2016 book by a man who was born in Sioux City, Iowa, on 11 Nov 1938 and he tells of his growing up years, most of which were spent in Leeds, which is a part of Sioux City and which in his growing up years was the site of Leeds High School, from which he graduated in January 1957. He ranked second in his graduating class , which had 13 members. (The class was a January class--the seniors graduated, mostly, I presume, in May since he says there were about 200 in the high school.) Since I came to Sioux City when I got out of law school in 1955 much of what he talks about in regard to how things were when he was growing up is familiar to me and I found his memory of those years often resonated with familiarity for me, and I enjoyed his account. I was disturbed when he told of his father losing an eye at work in 1948 and he indicated there was no worker's compensation in those days. This is obviously wrong, since workers' compensation was in every state well before 1948 and if his father did not receive workers' compensation for his at work injury he ws cheated by his employer. When I came to Sioux City I soon became aware that Leeds was a special place, and his stories of his years there are of interest to anyone who knows the time or the locale. They were for me..… (mais)
